  1. Media: twisted pair (two insulated wires, ~150 m), coaxial (inner conductor + spacers), fibre (2 Gbps), microwave (antenna beams + relays), geostationary satellites (speed = earth's rotation).
  2. Modes: simplex (one-way), half-duplex (walkie-talkie), full-duplex; devices — modem (both modulate & demodulate), MUX (many signals/one channel), FEP (off-loads host communication).
  3. Networks: BANKNET (RBI, Nagpur, X.25 packet-switched; MTU 400 users/node; RBI Net rides on it), NICNET (NIC 1976), INFINET (Saraf Committee, Hyderabad/IDRBT, now IFTAS — Feb 2015); SFMS = domestic secure messaging.
Law update, September 2026. Current limits: ₹1 lakh per day for P2P; ₹5 lakh per transaction and ₹10 lakh per day for specified merchant categories (from 15 Sep 2025); biometric-authenticated UPI ₹10,000 per transaction (from 7 Aug 2026). MDR on UPI remains zero even after the August 2026 amendment to Sec. 10A of the PSS Act, which only lets the Government notify charge-free modes.
