Key facts examiners test from this unit

  1. HRD and its sub-systems — people are assets, so develop them. Upgrading existing staff costs less than hiring; HRD builds capabilities, potential and a collaborative culture through six sub-systems.
  2. Job and role analysis — job analysis lists what a job involves (JD) and what the person needs (JS); role analysis adds mutual expectations and KPAs.
  3. Learning and development — people grow, so organisations channel learning. Nadler separates training, education and development, and adults learn by active inquiry (andragogy).

Question 1 of 5
What does a job specification define?
Why (d): A job specification defines the knowledge, skills and abilities needed: education, experience, specific knowledge, temperament. (a) is wrong: Layout is unrelated. (b) is wrong: Activities are in the job description. (c) is wrong: Worth for wages is job evaluation.
Question 2 of 5
What was Thorndike's revised view about learning and age?
Why (a): Thorndike first said the ability to learn diminishes with age, then modified it: the speed of learning diminishes, not the power. (b) is wrong: It reverses the revised view. (c) is wrong: Speed does decline. (d) is wrong: The power to learn remains.
Question 3 of 5
At the high-involvement end of the methodology continuum, the meaning of what the learner is exposed to is:
Why (d): At high involvement the meaning is internal; the learner analyses his own experience and is responsible for his learning. (a) is wrong: The learner's own experience is central. (b) is wrong: External meaning and awareness describe low involvement. (c) is wrong: Conclusions come from the learner.
Question 4 of 5
Why can a career path not guarantee smooth movement to the top for every officer?
Why (b): A career path maps possible moves, but organisations are pyramids, with fewer posts at each higher level, and each move needs performance benchmarks to be crossed, so not everyone can rise in step. (a) is wrong: Paths follow the organisation's job structure, not the branch; a transfer does not reset them. (c) is wrong: The textbook expects the path to be made known from entry. (d) is wrong: Paths are not redrawn each year; the limit is the pyramid of posts.
Question 5 of 5
Which roles keep a group cohesive through listening, respecting others and contributing?
Why (d): Members play task roles and maintenance roles; maintenance roles keep the group cohesive and matter in the long run. (a) is wrong: Apprentice is a career role. (b) is wrong: Task roles get the work done. (c) is wrong: Sponsor is a career role.
